After completion of the human genome, it soon became clear that the genome does not encode for much more than 20,000-25,000 genes. With the advent of next generation sequencing technologies, it is nowadays also well recognized that human cell lines do not express more than 13,000-15,000 transcripts. However, mRNA abundance is an insufficient descriptor for the actual cellular abundance of proteins. Enabled by the first draft of the human proteome in ProteomicsDB, we therefore set out to systematically study the expression of human proteins across cell lines, tissues and body fluids..
