摘要

Smoking behavior has a significant effect on exposure to cigarette smoke and the toxic chemicals that are present. Urinary metabolite analyses afford the opportunity to establish the nicotine metabolizer phenotype through comparison of the individual metabolite concentrations with the parent drug. Such measurements make it possible to relate cigarette exposure to urinary biological response biomarkers such as isoprostanes (iPFs). It is noteworthy that although 85-90percent of lung cancer is due to tobacco smoking only between 0.1 and 16percent of smokers actually develop lung cancer. Therefore, identifying biomarkers for those subjects at risk would help identify individuals for enrollment in smoking cessation programs and/or initiation of preventative treatment.
