Coomassie stain, both silver stains, and all three fluorescent stains examined are compatible with LC-MS using electrospray ionization. At protein levels above the detection limit of the LC-MS system (50 ng/band), sequence coverage for all five stains was similar to that for Coomassie stain. Oxidatively modified amino acid residues were observed for all six stains, with the Oriole and Flamingo stains exhibiting the least number of modified sites and the Silver Stain Plus and SYPRO Ruby stains exhibiting the greatest number of modifications.
