A High Throughput Screening Method for Determining Plasma Protein Binding Using a Six Sigma Approach

The Merck Six Sigma methodology is a business philosophy of focusing on continuous improvement by understanding customers' needs, analyzing business processes, and instituting proper measurement methods. In this project, Six Sigma techniques were used to improve the plasma protein binding assay currently used to obtain preliminary data for research compounds from ongoing projects. The primary approach was the utilization of the DMAIC system, a structured problem-solving methodology. DMAIC is an acronym for the 5 phases of the Six Sigma improvement: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control. These phases help lead a team logically from defining a problem through implementing solutions linked to underlying causes and establishing best practices to make sure the solutions stay in place.
