摘要

Water is an essential requirement of human beings and industrial developments which is readily used directly or indirectly in quantity and in quality. In order to give assessment to bioavailability of heavy metals in water effluent from Egbin Thermal Station. Water samples were collected from the station at Ijede via Dcorodu in Lagos state with the view to determining the effect of industrial effluents on the water quality of the river to provide necessary information to Environmentalists over the level of pollution. The concentration of heavy metals namely Copper, Zinc, Lead, Iron and Manganese in water used to cool the electrical system (turbine) were analysed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results showed that the pollution of this river due to high level of Zinc was not really from the effluent coming out of the Plant but attributed to other sources since the effluent from the Plant were well managed before it is discharged into the main river. The low level of heavy metals when compared to others indicates that the river water is not contaminated. It is therefore recommended that more strict method should be adopted to control the effluent management and to check, if possible, the activities of the residents at Egbin to reduce further pollution inputs into the river.
