Randomised comparison of the LMA-SupremeTM (SLMA) with the 1-GeITM during anaesthesia in spontaneously breathing anaesthetized adult patients

The aim of this prospective randomised controlled trial was to compare the clinical performance of the LMA-SupremeTM (SLMA) with the I-GelTM during anesthesia in spontaneously breathing anaesthetized adult patients. Sixty-four, ASA I-II patients were studied. Success rates for insertion at the first attempt were similar (SLMA 97% vs I-gel 100%; p = 0.13). The OLP was significantly greater for the SLMA (median (IQR [range]) 24 [20.5- 29] cmH20) than the I-gel (20.50 [15 - 25.75] cmH20; p=0.009). The ease of insertion was better with SLMA compared to I-gel (p= 0.04). The incidence of trauma, gastric tube passed at the first attempt, perioperative complications were similar in both groups. Grade of fibreoptic view were significantly better for I-gel than the SLMA (p=0.003).
