Is ProSeal~(TM) A Better Choice Than Classic~(TM) Laryngeal Mask Airway For Children? A Randomized Controlled Trial In The Anaesthetized Non-paralyzed Daycare Children

We compared ProSeal~(TM) and Classic~(TM) laryngeal mask airway (LMA) in 60 anaesthetized, spontaneously breathing children in daycare surgery. After randomization and a standard induction of general anaesthesia, the ProSeal~(TM) LMA or Classic~(TM) LMA was inserted. The number of attempts of insertion, airway sealing pressure, fibreoptic grades and frequency of gastric insufflation were measured. Upon completion of surgery, the laryngeal mask airway was removed and any complication was documented. We found that fibreoptic position grade 4 was higher in ProSeal~(TM) LMA group (P=0.028) but no difference in the overall fibreoptic position grade. There was no difference between the two groups for the number of attempts of insertion, airway sealing pressure and frequency of gastric insufflation. We conclude that the performance of both ProSeal~(TM) and Classic~(TM) LMA was similar in terms of insertion and placement in the children.
