Cleft Lip and/or Palate Congenital Oral Disease Gene Bank, 2009

The incidence of cleft lip and palate, even the highest incidence among congenital anomalies, is only 0.015%, much less cleft lip and palate syndromes. Hence, it is very difficult for one institute alone to obtain the cases of cleft lip and palate syndromes. We have conducted epidemiological studies and laboratory based studies for development of model animals and predisposing factors of the disease. For recent 15 years, we have conducted collaborate research with Professor Jeffrey Murray at the Division of Neonatology and Genetics of University of Iowa and other investigators. As the "Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research A (No. 21406032)" of "Japan Society for the Promotion of Science", we made "Gene Banking of Congenital Oral and Maxillofacial Anomalies", so called "Cleft Gene Bank", which is the only one institution in Japan. Coded information on genes in the oral and maxillofacial region is kept accurately and safely in the Bank. We have analyzed 7,200 cases of genes, which is the biggest analyzed cases in Japan, and reported the results.
