Most studies on influences of different color backgrounds on fish focus on their growth, feeding, immunity, and physiological responses. Compared with results for swimming fish, background, especially the bottom of the tank, is more important to flatfish as this is where they spend most of time. Amiya et al. (2008) elucidated background color affects MCH (melanin-concentrating hormone) and chicken GnRH-ll excretions in the brain of barfin flounder. Amano et al. (2009) reported that white background stimulates food intake, growth rate, and MCH mRNA expression of barfin flounder compared to a black background. Papoutsoglou et al. (2007) determined lighter or blue background is better for sea bream performance. However, the background color preferenceof swimming or flatfish is rarely reported.
