Measurements of the characteristics of particulate matter (PM) were performed at the inlet and outletof the electrostatic precipitators (ESP) of four boilers. The properties of PM including concentration, masssize distribution, emission characteristics, percent penetration of PM through ESP and elementalcomposition were investigated. The Experimental results indicate that, in all the cases the mass sizedistribution of PM10 was typically bimodal. PM1 represented up to 1.15 % of the total particle matter (TP)generated in the boilers. PM2.5 was about 2 - 7% of the TP, and PM_(10) represented about 4 -19% of the TP.Percent penetration was a function of particle diameter and peaked in the particle size range of 0.2-0.6μm. Particles inthe submicron size range were much more difficult to collect with ESP than larger particles.
