There are a number of congenital disorders of the brain and cervical spine encountered in dogs which arc amenable to surgical treatment. Recognition of these abnormalities has increased in recent years due to increased availability of MR imaging in our profession. Whereas surgical treatment options are well described for some of these abnormalities, others have only recently been reported in the veterinary literature. The purpose of this presentation is to briefly describe the surgical procedures associated with a number of disorders: congenital hydrocephalus, intracranial arachnoid cyst, Chiari-like malformation (and similar disorders) and atlantoaxial instability.
