HOW TO GET THE LESION: US GUIDED THORACIC BIOPSY

Ultrasound-guided techniques facilitate aspiration of loculated fluid and biopsy of lesions of the lung, mediastinum, thoracic wall and pleural space provided that there is adequate contact between the lesion and the chest wall or pleural fluid is present. This technique is especially useful when the lesion is close to vital structures. Recent thoracic radiographs should be compared with the ultrasound findings before interventional procedures, and spectral or color Doppler techniques are used to exclude masses of vascular origin and to avoid normal vascular structures. The size, type, and location of the lesion ultimately determine whether ultrasound guided biopsy is possible.
