SERONEUTRALIZING CROSS-REACTION TO CSFV CAUSED BY BORDER DISEASE VIRUS INFECTION IN PIGS

Besides classical swine fever virus (CSFV), other pestiviruses from cattle and sheep may infect swine. Therefore, positive CSF-ELISA and virus neutralization test (VNT) titres in pig populations could be a confusing factor for epidemio-vigilance in CSFV free countries or, alternatively, could interfere with current eradication programmes in CSFV infected regions. After routinely serology screening of herds, antibodies to CSF virus was detected by ELISA on sera from a fattening farm located in the north-east area of Spain. VNT titres indicated no clear differences between the three pestiviruses used in the VNT (CSFV, bovine viral diarrhoea virus [BVDV] and Border disease virus [BDV]). Therefore, this case was characterised by virus isolation and sequencing, to elucidate the origin of these inconclusive sera reactions, and to propose an alternative to improve discrimination.
