New materials synthesized from di- and multifunctional deoxybenzoins are examined for their potential role in the future of non-flammable polymer materials. The deoxybenzoin monomer/polymer family combines key attributes needed for effective polymerization chemistry with an inherently low flammability that is evaluated on a small scale by calorimetric heat release capacity values, and tested also in larger scale flammability experiments. Lessons learned from this class of materials is instructive towards the design of new materials systems that build from this platform. Specific systems of interest for inclusion of deoxybenzoin are polyesters, epoxy polymers, and polyurethanes.
