Innovative best management practices (BMPs) are key elements of the sustainable design for the Port of Long Beach Portwide Storm Water Pollution Prevention and Dust Control Program (Program). These design elements were selected by utilizing sustainable technology in conjunction with chemical, physical and biological processes to remove pollutants present in stormwater runoff. Construction of the BMPs for the Program will start in mid 2008 and will be complete by mid 2009. BMPs were selected based on their applicability and effectiveness for removing specific pollutants or a range of pollutants simultaneously, using chemical, physical and/or biological processes. Innovative sustain- able technology was an important deciding factor in selecting the BMPs. Sustainability is an environmental ethic that places a high priority on the long-term protection and preser- vation of the Earth’s natural resources. Sustainable management practices combine a variety of physical, chemical, and biological processes to capture runoff and remove pollutants. Biological processes increase transpiration, nutrient cycling, direct uptake, and microbial decomposition. Physical processes such as filtration and volatilization, increase interception, infiltration, and evapotranspiration. Physical processes also facilitate sedi- ment removal and stabilize soils to reduce sedimentation and erosion.
