The environmental noise pollution is a key problem need to be solved for Beijing to be an ideal livable city. In order to understand the current situation of Beijing ambient noise pollution objectively and provide foundation data to environmental noise management and planning departments, a comprehensive investigation on ambient noise in Beijing public spaces has been carried out. The public area investigated comprised following nine kinds of spaces: shopping mall, supermarkets, railway stations, hospitals, dining spaces, electronic markets, household appliance markets, rail transit system and bus stations. Both noise measurements on the spot and subjective questionnaires were used. The results showed that noise in public spaces universally exceeded the allowed limits listed in related standards, and the people who stayed in these noisy public spaces frequently felt intrusive and annoyance. Finally, based on the investigation some countermeasures and suggestions for improving sound environment were put forward.
