Detection and On-Site Presumptive Testing of a Clandestine Drug Laboratory Using a Portable Mass Spectrometer

The analysis of the clandestine manufacture of a precursor to PCP was performed with both a mobile MIMS and backpack-mounted atmospheric inlet system. These analysis allowed for atomospheric detection of effluent, as well as confirmatory point of source detection with the atmospheric probe wand. It was determined that precursors to PCC were highly volatile and able to be detected at a distance and at the point of source. By combining the abilities to detect illicit chemicals both at a distance and at the point of source, this portable system can serve as the presumptive and confirmatory field test of clandestine manufacture.
