Cumulative data show that border cells are a unique cell type, primed for a shift from primary to secondary metabolism, and able to synthesize new compounds appropriate to conditions in the surrounding rhizosphere. The data strongly implicate a more prominent mechanistic role for border cells in plant-microbe signaling, defense and interactions than previously envisioned.
