Hydrolysis experiments were carried out to study newly formed functional groups with accurate mass LC/MS. In the hydrolysates of the treated RO membranes, mPD and TMA were observed as major components, together with low level of aryl azo dye compounds. It was concluded that the nitrous acid treatment was a straightforward method to reduce the amount of amine chain ends in the PA layer, which probably are involved in governing the properties of RO membranes.
