In-source CID using a single quadrupole provided sufficient discriminating power for the identification of piperazines of forensic interest in illicit samples encountered at our laboratory. The use of in-source CID has been shown to produce similar fragmentations as conventional CID in the collision cell of a tandem MS system, but not necessarily of the same intensity. Extracted ion monitoring was beneficial in deconvoluting complex chromatograms of illicit samples encountered at our laboratory. The electrospray method is robust and has been applied for routine screening of illicit samples containing poly-drug mixtures of controlled substances and piperazines, and is a complementary technique to GC/MS.
