The analysis of crude oils or crude oil components is difficu as it appears that there is not one method that can give an overview of these very complex samples. Making matters more complicated is that there is strong divergence in crude oils depending on the geological background. High resolution mass spectrometry has shown to be an effective tool for the analysis of crude oil components. Even here, the use of a single ionization methods make it impossible to analyze whole crudes because the information gained is just showing parts of the whole picture. One of our focuses is to study mass spectrometry of crude oils for the classification of sulfur containing compounds. We used different ionization methods including electrospray ionization (ESI), matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and introduced a derivatization procedures.
