Multidimensional ion mobility separations have been used in an attempt to characterize the isomeric composition of N-linked glycans. The mobility dimension has separated different gas phase structures of isobaric ions that sometimes result several features in the t_(D) profile for an single species. Mobility selected ions that show a t_(D) distribution identical to the precursor after ion activation are the result of several stable conformations of the same ion. This method allows for the separation of structures that have similar mobilities prior to activation and correspond to different isomers.
