Membrane introduction mass spectrometry (MIMS) is a useful method for both chemical measurement and temporally resolved reaction monitoring. It has several advantages, including direct sample introduction, real-time monitoring and high sensitivity, especially for volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOC/SVOCs). MIMS techniques also provide a powerful tool in the study of membrane transport processes, which depend on the molecular structure of the permeating species. We propose to employ MIMS techniques to measure physiochemical properties of organic contaminants that are important determinants in their fate and distribution in the environment, such as the octanol-water distribution coefficient (Kow). We present a method to simultaneously determine diffusion and partitioning coefficients of organic analytes present in complex aqueous mixtures.
