This paper presents the results of preliminary design of zero emission hybrid architecture of small sized city bus working on "dense grid" transportation network with short and regular stop spacing. The vehicle configuration uses two electric traction motor directly coupled to wheels, powered by an hybrid unit composed by functional linking of fuel cell and flywheel energy storage system. The functioning of the power unit in relation to a cyclical and not homogeneous motion of urban route is analysed and defined. With relation to the common state of practice, the vantages and disadvantages of the rotating kinetic store system of energy on board of vehicle are discussed. Finally a bus of about 30 passengers of carrying capacity is considered and the main components of system are dimensioned.
