Noise is one of the main concerns when speaking about riding comfort. The advent of MRL has required the traction machine to now be located inside the hoistway. This increases noise inside the buildings, thus making it closer to apartments/offices and elevator users. Development of a more compact gearless design as a solution for MRL has led to a new bearing arrangement. Meeting industry needs, the sealed spherical roller bearing has allowed manufacturers to increase the load carrying capacity of their machines while maintaining or even downsizing the bearing arrangement. Switching from ball to roller type, bearing noise has, however, slightly increased. This paper presents a study of bearing parameters influencing this increase in noise.
