Natural organic matter (NOM) and mineral oxides exert an important effect on chemical speciation and the transport of nutrients or contaminants in soils and sediments. The mutual interaction between them may affect the role of the mineral oxides as reactive surfaces in natural environments, because their chemical properties may be altered (1).
