Survey Implementation

The workshop identified a number of potentially very worthwhile research topics relating to the implementation of travel surveys: 1. The development of flexible protocols on interview/interviewer and respondent tailoring; 2. The data freshness issue, notably data retrieval and its relationship to the level of detail being collected and the level of recall support (such as a map) provided; 3. Developing approaches to combine GPS, multimodal and panel responses over time; 4. The effect of call-back time delays in retrieving diaries; 5. The implications of cell-phone usage in future surveys; and 6. Response comparability across survey methods in multimodal surveys (telephone, postal, personal interview and Internet surveys). Finally, the workshop recorded its appreciation of the considerable efforts made by Stopher, Wilmot, Stecher and Alsnih in drafting a set of admirable basic practice standards and expressed the hope that, as far as survey implementation was concerned, the workshop had been able to contribute to refining those standards.
