One method for determining a navigation plan for a towed matrix marine seismic survey includes: dividing a survey area into a regular grid of reticles; and identifying a subset of the lattices as nodes around which continuously curved navigation lines are defined. nodes define a regular pattern, including: a first node sub-pattern; and a second sub-pattern of nodes away from the first sub-pattern. alternatively, computer readable program storage media may be encoded with instructions which, when executed by a processor, perform the method, or a computing apparatus may be programmed to perform the method. A method for conducting a towed matrix marine survey includes: traversing a plurality of navigation lines continuously curved through a search area, each navigation line being relative to a node; and seismic data acquisition during the crossing of continuously curved navigation lines. The set of nodes defining a regular pattern still includes: a first node sub-pattern; and a second sub-pattern of nodes away from the first sub-pattern.
