Honeywell is currently developing a Drive Train Prognostic System (DTPS) for the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV). Two mission critical components monitored by the DTPS are the planetary gear sets in the marine drive train that transfer power to the twin water jets. This paper will describe our approach to monitoring the planetary gears using vibration sensors, time synchronous averaging, feature extraction, diagnosis, trending and prognosis. We describe some of the challenges and considerations for planetary gear monitoring on the EFV within the framework of the DTPS architecture.
