Safe and Environmentally Sound Pipe, Hose Connections,'The Boots on Ground Approach to Meet New Regulations' (abstract)

As new environmental regulations covering the safe connection of pipes,hoses and pig capturing closures looms or is in effect,engineers are facing challenges to develop technologies that deal with 1)EUB regulations that quantify the levels of hydrocarbons allowed to reach ground level 2)being aware of new&existing Boiler Safety Associations demands for pressure containing connections and their hazards 3)being aware of new Work Place Safety Regulations pertaining to hydrocarbon draining,double block and bleeding and assuring the safe removal of pipeline cleaning pigs.Economic factors affect the viability of existing facility expansion or that of announced'mega projects',where the scrutiny and effective planning to curtail the prospect of project cost overruns and expensive delays.Designers are required to forecast the specter of commodity price fluctuations,construction material price increases,labour shortages and react to the details of how to safely connect hoses,tie into pipes and pig safely.The author will give a world perspective on safety regulations to bench marks Alberta position and offer tangible design solutions being adopted by leading edge members of Petroleum community in Alberta.
