Preface: Proceedings of the 53rd Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, Austin, Texas, November 2008

These two volumes constitute Proceedings of the 53rd Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM53), which was held in Austin, Texas, in the Hilton Austin Hotel, on 11-14 November 2008. The conference had 1372 registered attendees from academic institutions, national laboratories, and industry from 38 countries. Of the attendees, 466 were students. Submissions from Asian countries continued to grow, particularly from China and South Korea. From a total of 2169 submitted abstracts, 1511 abstracts (70 percent) were accepted for presentation at the conference. The program included a special session on the new iron-based superconductors on Monday evening, an Open Forum on Magnetic Modeling on Wednesday evening, seven invited symposia on fundamental and applied topics in magnetism, 36 individual invited talks, and 1438 contributed oral and poster presentations. A Best Student Presentation competition was held. The winner was Sara Jean Gamble of Stanford University. Best Poster Awards were presented, with the winning posters displayed in the entrance hallway to the meeting ballrooms throughout the meeting.
