CRIME ANALYSIS FOR DESIGN PROFESSIONALS: ARCHITECTS, LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS, URBAN DESIGNERS AND PLANNERS

Design professionals including architects, landscape architects, urban designers and planners, undertake site and neighborhood analysis as an important part of any successful design in the urban environment. Crime analysis is not generally included in this process. This paper suggests a method used in Vancouver, British Columbia, which incorporates crime risk into the site analysis and neighborhood analysis used by design professionals. This is done by assessing neighborhood features such as demographics, crime information, site features, surrounding uses, consultation of neighbors and pathway analysis with a specific focus on establishing the first order determiners of crime, that is, pathways and places where there is a presence of high risk populations.
