Mechanisms responsible for changes in cardiac vulnerability over the course of ischemia phase 1A remain poorly understood; this is due to rapid changes in electrophysiological properties, which renders experimental evaluation difficult. To examine changes in vulnerability over the course of acute global ischemia phase IA, anatomically-accurate bidomain rabbit ventricular model was used. Results demonstrate that 3-4min after ischemia onset, the upper limit of vulnerability (ULV) decreases and the vulnerable window (VW) shifts towards longer coupling intervals. Changes in ULV are due to increases in the extent of shock-end wavefronts, while shifts in VW stem from post-shock conduction failure.
