There is a clinical need for an immunologically compatible surgical patch with a wide range of uses including soft tissue replacement, body wall or dural repair, cardiovascular applications and use as a wound dressing. The study aim was to produce an acellular matrix from human amniotic membrane and for its use as a surgical patch and as a delivery system for epithelial cells. A novel detergent based protocol (1) was modified to remove all cellular components from human amnion in order to render it non immunogenic.
