Effects of Plant Origin Preparations on the Growth of Fungi Isolated from Seeds of Selected Vegetables

Alternaria alternata, A. brassicae, A. brassicicola. Fusarium avenaceum, F. oxysporum, Phoma lingam, Penicillium corymbifentm and P. cyclopium were isolated from cabbage seeds. A. alternata. A. dauci and A. radicina were isolated from carrot seeds andA. potri, Botrytis aclada, B. cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum and Stemphylium botryosum from onion seeds. The fungi were grown in Petri dishes on plain potato dextrose agar (PDA) as well as on the medium supplemented with Citrosept (a.i. grapefruit extract), Fitoekols-IF (a.i. pine and spruce needles extract) or standard recommended fungicides, i.e. metalaxyl, carbendazim, thiram and iprodione against fungi isolated from cabbage seeds, iprodione against fungi from carrot seeds and benomyl, metalaxyl and thiabendazole against fungi from onion seeds. Citrosept was added to PDA in three concentrations: 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 %, whereas Fitoekols-IF was added at concentration of 2.0 %. Petri dishes were placed in darkness at 20 °C. Diameters of fungal colonies were measured after 7 and 14 days of incubation. Both plant origin preparations inhibited growth of the examined fungi, but Citrosept at a concentration of 0.5 % controlled growth of fungi to the largest extent.
