The Fundamentals of Building an Effective Neurosurgical Practice

There are numerous fundamental issues to consider when developing a neurosurgical practice; the most important being the neurosurgeon's clinical judgment and surgical skills. Not only must you be confident in your level of clinical training, but you must be willing to quickly learn new skills so you can build and manage your practice. This may appear to be a daunting task to someone who just recently finished an extensive neurosurgical residency training program. It may be more prudent to consider a fellowship early in your career if you are inclined to subspecialize in the field of neurosur-gery as it is more difficult to undertake extensive retraining later in a career. Be sure you have basic business knowledge and a fundamental understanding of accounting and healthcare law when you start your medical practice, no matter what practice setting you choose.
