High Voltage Pulse Cable Assemblies for Use in Particle Accelerators

Accelerator particle beams have usually to be transferred between several stages of acceleration and to be removed from the accelerator to be directed towards an experiment or. at the end of a scientific session or in case of emergency, in a dump block. To perform these actions fast electromagnets are used which are excited with high voltage and high current pulses. Two types of cables and connectors are described which will be used to transmit such high power pulses in the beam dumping system of the LHC, currently under construction at CERN (Geneva). The requirements and the cable constructions are presented, along with design parameters like dielectric strength, partial discharge, attenuation and current carrying capacity. Special connectors have been developed for these cables, which are also described. The cable-connector assemblies have been successfully tested with up to three times the nominal current for millions of pulses.
