PROJECT PROPOSAL ACVP: Oncology Initiative The Canine Lymphoma Classification Project A Clinico-Pathologic Evaluation of the WHO Classification System on Canine Nodal and Extranodal Lymphoma

The specific purpose and strategy for this undertaking is to demonstrate the application of the WHO system for classification of Lymphomas and Leukemias in animals by experienced diagnosticians. Further to test the consistency (interobserver variability) arid reproducibility (intraobserver variability on a large group of canine lym-phomas. The International Lymphoma Study Group developed the REAL (Revised European American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms)1'2'3 based on the criterion that each category included must constitute a well described and documented disease entity in contrast to cell type or morphology. Thus in order to make a correct diagnosis in all cases it is essential for some neoplasms to have complete morphologic detail, immunophenotype, topographical information on distribution of tumor and signalment data. The REAL system was adopted largely intact in the 2000 revision of the WHO system of hematopoietic tumor classification and has been applied to animals in the WHO series International Histological Classification of Tumours of Domestic Animals in 2002.
