Synergistic effect of solvent and absorption enhancer on transdermal permeation of a lipophilic drug through rat skin

High blood pressure is the major cause for stroke leading to morbidity and mortality. Although the current market is flushed with oral antihypertensive drugs but this conventional route suffers from drawbacks like poor bioavailability, excessive hepatic degradation, higher dose and multiple dosage regimen. In addition, almost 30% of patients miss a dose at least weekly. Thus to overcome the above problems, a pre-formulation study, for the optimization of the solvent system and the permeation enhancers for transdermal delivery of an antihypertensive drug- Carvedilol has been carried out.
