The role of estrogen supplementation during the luteal phase in in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer cycles: a comparative study between progesterone alone and estrogen plus progesterone support

Objective: To evaluate the effect of adding E_2 to progesterone supplementation during luteal phase on pregnancy and implantation rates in in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. Materials and methods: Eighty patients undergoing IVF-embryo transfer (ET) cycles were randomly allocated into two groups. Group I received progesterone alone and Group II received E_2 in addition to progesterone for luteal support. E_2 level on day of hCG administration and serum E_2 and progesterone levels on day 14 after ET were measured, and E_2 and progesterone profiles of luteal phase and pregnancy and abortion rates were documented Results: Pregnancy and abortion rates were similar in two groups. Conclusion: We have found no beneficial effect by adding E2 to progesterone for luteal phase support in long protocol IVF-ET cycles.
