Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is reported to be effective for cartilage repair, but its effects are limited without a drug delivery system because bFGF is lost by diffusion. We investigated the effects of exogenous basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) with drug delivery system on the 'repair of full-thickness cartilage defects. bFGF with gelatin microspheres and hyaluronan sponge improved the repair of osteochondral defects in rabbits.
