Policy Options for the Nigerian Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV Program

Nigeria commenced its national prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) program in July 2002. The Nigerian PMTCT program is centered round 11 university teaching hospitals. A recent review of the first 18-month program revealed that it has reach about 25,000 women and initial results are impressive. However, the review raised many other implementation and monitoring and evaluation issues. This paper examines Nigeria's strategic options and program outcomes and proposes policy options.
