Medical management of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) has been disappointing. Immunosuppressive drugs, copper-chelating agents, and antibiotics do not appear to alter progression of the disease Treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid may slow progression of disease. The judicious use of dilation of strictures can palliate jaundice and may improve survival, but liver transplantation remains the definitive treatment.
