LCs are classified as non-hazardous materials. LCDs are classified in the European Waste Catalogue under the waste code number 16 02 16. Landfill of LCDs is legally a "Disposal" and contradicts to the WEEE targets. Merck KGaA recommends the recovery of LCDs as protection of the wall in incinerators. It is today the best ecological and economical way to fulfill the requirements of the WEEE.
