The goal of industrialized nations of limiting carbon dioxide emissions to the environment from industrial point sources, such as coal-fired power generation units, can only be achieved by developing low-cost CO_2 capture technologies coupled with sensible sequestration methods. Many different technological options are available that could be used for CO_2 capture from gas streams. The selection of a particular technology would depend on the characteristic of the gas stream and the extent to which CO_2 needs to be removed. For flue gases where the CO_2 partial pressure is low and temperature and pressure of the gas is near atmospheric, the chemical absorption using aqueous solution of primary amines, such as MEA,is probably the best option even though this process is known to be quite energy intensive with high levels of corrosion and MEA degradation.
