As a result of numerous inquiries concerning the 'mailability' of used mercury lamps and specific requirements associated with mailing these items,this memo has been prepared for Aviation Mail Security at U.S.Postal Service Headquarters.Currently,many Post Offices in the Northeast recycle used lamps through mail-back procedures using designated lamp recycling companies.Some elements of these mail-back programs have raised regulatory,policy and communication issues that require resolution.In order to resolve these issues we have prepared this position paper on mailing mercury-containing lamps.Summarized below are the 10 myths of mailing mercury lamps and the truth behind the myths.
