Although classical Ziegler-type vanadium catalysts displayed interesting characteristics in olefin polymerization due to the high reactivity toward olefins, examples concerning studies in organo-vanadium complexes have been limited. We recently reported that (arylimido)vanadium(V) complexes containing anionic doner ligand of type, (ArN)VX2(L) (L: aryloxo, ketimide etc.; X = halogen, alkyl), were effective as the catalyst precursors for both olefin coordionation polymerization and ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). We also demonstrated unique reactivity of the bis(ketimide)vanadium(V) methyl complexess with various alcohols. In this paper, we thus present synthesis, identification, structural determination of various (arylimido)vanadium(V)-alkyl, alkylidene complexes, and their use as the catalyst for ROMP of norbornene.
