Protein nutrition of an animal is a subject of much discussion and research. This is because protein (after energy) is the second most expensive ingredient in a typical diet, and in some speciality diets it is the most expensive. Protein nutrition isalso relatively complicated, as it involves combining several feed ingredients with the objective of matching or exceeding the nutritional requirement for the essential amino acids while minimizing cost and anti-nutritional factors, and additionally in some situations minimizing environmental impact resulting from excess nitrogen excretion.
