End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) are shredded for the purpose of recovery of iron with resulting in Automobile Shredder Residue (ASR) as residues, about 20 % of a new car. Most of ASR is disposed of by landfill in Korea. However the advanced countries in Europe and Japan have set a goal to reduce the final amount of disposal to less than 5 % of a new car by the year of 2015 and put a lot of efforts to develop appropriate alternatives to meet a goal. For the future expecting enforcement like those countries, the automobile industries in the country must prepare any schemes to meet the future goal. In this work, the present status on management of ASR such as generation and treatment process with mass balance in a shredding plant to understand the characterization of ASR has been investigated. Based on analyzed properties of ASR, some feasible thermal alternatives are suggested. In case of utilizing a conventional combustion technology, the reduction could be achieved around 5-7% of a new car, however to ensure such a goal as the advanced countries has set as less than 5 %, the melting with gasification/pyrolysis could be the best option with environmentally sound image of the automobile industries.
