Survey reveals that about 14.6 million cubic meters of silt is settling in the river or in reservoir each year in Taiwan. Therefore, removal and reutilization of the sludge becomes an important issue. The present work describes the preparation and characterization of building materials using reservoir sludge by a powder-sintering process. The results show that treated products (also called microstructure materials) with desirable properties and microstructures could be obtained after a heat treatment at 1150°C for 0.5 h. The addition of waste glasses powder with the treated products resulted in a decrease in the sintering temperature and subsequently the characteristics of microstructure materials are found to be improved. These materials are found to possess a good quality and have a great potential as a viable alternative for construction applications. The microstructures and properties of the materials are characterized and the results are discussed.
